Cedar Gables Inn in Downtown Napa is a historic Bed & Breakfast in The Heart of Wine Country. The historic significance of Cedar Gables Inn stretches back to 1892 as one of the top architects in San Francisco, Earnest Coxhead, applied the emerging Arts & Crafts style to the residential architecture of the Cedar Gables Inn.

Who was Earnest Coxhead

Earnest Coxhead was an English born architect who practiced his draftsmanship stateside in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Coxhead was trained at the Royal Academy and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. When Earnest moved to the United States, he primarily focused his designs on the Gothic Revival Style and was heavily involved in church architecture. After the 1890s, Earnest Coxhead began to lead the emerging Arts & Crafts Architectural Style, which incorporated the characteristics of English Country Houses including shingles, gabled roofs, pointed arches, brick fireplaces, steep roofs, and wide porches—many of the very design elements you will find inside and outside the Cedar Gables Inn.

Coxhead was born the fourth of six children of William Coxhead in Eastbourne, East Sussex, England in 1863. At age 23, Coxhead immigrated to California with his older brother. Earnest established an independent architectural practice in Los Angeles and secured commissions to design several Episcopal Churches in Southern California. His successes in SoCal led to the commissioning of several more churches in Northern California, where he moved to San Francisco. He designed a total of 17 churches of which 11 still stand today.

After the 1890s, Coxhead began to focus on residential buildings and ended up designing dozens of homes in Northern California in the Arts & Crafts style, primarily in San Francisco and Berkeley, California. He even ventured north to Napa where he designed the then Churchill House, which today is known as Cedar Gables Inn.

Coxhead lived in San Francisco with his wife and three children until his death in 1933. Coxhead left an indelible impression as he guided the Arts & Crafts movement’s influence on American architecture. Many of his drafts and collections of his work can be found at the University of California at Berkeley’s archives.

Napa Valley is synonymous with world class wineries and fine wines they produce. As William Shakespeare once said – “The wine-cup is the little silver well, where truth, if truth there be, doth dwell.” And truth be told, Napa is home to 400 outstanding wineries, and consolidating this list to the top 5 is a daunting task.

Napa is the fertile agriculture wine basket of California. Napa Valley is held as a globally premier wine region and is home to dozens of varieties of grapes. However, the recognized grape varieties that are grown and harvested in Napa include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Petit Verdot & Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Syrah/Shiraz, Petite Sirah, and Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio.
Napa vintners have been commercially producing wines since the 19th century, and they have graced connoisseurs with awe-inspiring premium wines since the ‘60s.

Rutherford Hill Winery:  This family owned winery sits high atop a hill that offers breathtaking views of Napa Valley.  Rutherford Hill Winery pioneered the development of Merlot in California.  Guests can enjoy award-winning Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet.

Chateau Montelena Winery:  Here is another family owned gem that uses only organic, sustainable farming methods.  Their old world style handcrafted wines which are aged in French oak barrels include fabulous Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Caymus Winery:  Caymus Vineyard is owned by the Wagner family, and produces two Cabernets Sauvignons which deliver rich flavors and aromas.  Visitors to Caymus Winery will enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.

Nickel & Nickel:  Guests will find Nickel & Nickel in a bucolic setting located in Oakville in Napa.  Nickel & Nickel produces varietal, single-vineyard wines that boast varied characters.  They offer single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a small collection of Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah – all single-vineyard of course.

Cardinale Winery:   This winery sits in the heart of Napa Valley, and produces limited-productions Cabernet Sauvignon blends with dark flavors that are the artistic expression of Winemaker Christopher Carpenter, and will surpass your expectations.

There are so many fantastic wineries that should be included on this list, like Del Dotto Vineyards, Artesa Winery,  Far Niente, Schweiger Vineyards, Hourglass Winery, Lokoya,  Domaine Carneros, and more.  It is nearly impossible to choose just five, but we highly recommend that you extend your stay in Napa Valley to discover your favorites.

The Silverado Trail in Napa Valley is one of the finest routes through the wine country, perfect for a leisurely drive or an idyllic bike ride. You may even hire a limo and be chauffeured around, exploring the beautiful Silverado Trail while drinking to the content of your heart. Silverado Trail is as much about the wine itself as it is about touring vineyards. Exploring Silverado Trail is definitely one of the top things to do in Napa, CA. Your vacation or adventure to Napa Wine Country will be incomplete if you do not explore this back road.

About the Silverado Trail

Silverado Trail is twenty nine miles long. If you do not stopping for wine tours or extensive wine tasting, the drive or ride would take you about an hour to complete. The scenery along the trail will depend on the time of the year. Spring is when you would find the earth carpeted with gorgeous yellow mustard flowers. Summer will compel you to jostle for space. Fall is when the grapes are harvested and definitely the time for wine connoisseurs throng Napa. Winter is wet so expect a drive or ride in the rain.

Silverado Trail is a back road running parallel to California State Route 29. Although the larger wineries are along SR 29, there are quite a few along the trail. The trail is not a meandering route. It is more of a roadway with curves and dips set by the foothills. The journey is delightful primarily owing to the spectacular views of the mountains and the vineyards.

You can rent a car or a bike. There are enough options. You could hire a chauffeur driven limo. Start the drive or ride at the southern end of the trail that meets Trancas Street. Drive or bike past the Chardonnay grapevines, Yountville Cross Road, Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards, get to the Napa River Ecological Reserve, then to Yountville and eventually back to Silverado Trail north. The mountains, oaks, chaparral, fir, sedimentary rocks, alluvial deposits, the sight and fragrance of wine grapes among many other subtle and very bucolic elements will make your drive or ride through Napa Wine Country a truly memorable experience.
